By train from the Abbey District to the oasis of nature.

The Mühleggbahn is a funicular railway that connects the old town of St.Gallen with the Drei Weieren recreation area and the district of St.Georgen. The railway was opened in 1893 as a water weight cable railway and became a rack railway in 1950. In 1975, the railway had to be renewed. The necessary capital was lacking and the railway was on the verge of definitive closure when Paul Hell raised the necessary money in a last-minute fundraising campaign. With this, the lift was converted to the electric drive system that still exists today. This system is called an inclined lift, the passenger cabin moves in fully automated operation as required at the push of a button.
