An ancient Walser house over 300 years old gives an insight into the life and work of mountain farmers in days gone by.

Bürserberg is a settlement boasting well over 500 years of history. Enjoying a diverse landscape and an unrivalled position, our community has been subjected to a chequered past. Nowadays it seems imperative to provide a tangible memory of that mind-set which gave our ancestors the strength - in spite of all the adversities and setbacks thrown at them by the “raw and wild mountains”, as a documented reference describes – to create one of the loveliest alpine villages in our area. In the face of the increasing loss of our rural culture in the last few decades, it is even more important to preserve a small part of this historic environment for the future.

Exhibition: The Rätikon

This mountain chain with its magnificent peaks, its glorious climbing history and the founding of the alpine huts is the subject of this current exhibition in the Paarhof Buacher folklore museum.

The first section introduces the visitor to the history and development of mountain huts in the Rätikon. Particular attention is paid here to the Douglasshütte. This is the best known hut in the Rätikon, and has an eventful history of destruction and restoration. There follows a section on the peaks of the Rätikon, where it is noted that no other mountain chain of its size boasts quite so many named summits - over 300 of them in total, each with its own name. A place in the exhibition is also dedicated to those brave people who were responsible for conquering many of these peaks for the first time. It includes the stories of old pioneers like Toni Hiebeler and Emanuel Strubich, as well as representatives of the present day, such as Beat Kammerlander. One aspect that has changed dramatically from the early days is, of course, the equipment used by the mountaineers to reach their goal. The contrasting exhibits in the neighbouring room show this very clearly: visitors can see the knickerbockers and heavy felt coats alongside the functional clothing of today, and compare the 2 metre skis of yesteryear with current tapered carvers.
