Fallbach via ferrata

Pause mit Blick ins Tal am Klettersteig Fallbach im Klostertal
Nature sights, Sports, Crag

In early 2018 a new climbing route was established on the massive Fallbachwand by the waterfall of the same name, known hitherto only to ice climbers. This long, moderately difficult via ferrata, which progresses along the right bank of the Fallbach river in the Klostertal, offers great panoramic views and a sensational climbing experience. The climbing route has no technically extreme sections to overcome, but the relentless C/D and C sections and especially the total length of the route as a whole make it a considerable challenge even for experienced via ferrata climbers. Conclusion: This via ferrata is definitely not for beginners, but for keen via ferrata aficionados with the appropriate experience and stamina, it is an absolute must!

Route description:

Fairly steep at the start then evens out as far as the first steep bracketed section (C/D). Continue the ascent of this wall (C/D), to cross over a ridge and reach a steep stepped area. From here continue towards the waterfall (often C) until a flat area with loose stones is reached. This is the end of the first steep lower section. The climb continues to the right in a series of steps involving some steep sections (to B/C) until an area with a bench is reached. This is followed by another easier stretch with some grassy sections (up to grade B in places) until a small scree-filled gully is reached, coming down from the right. The route passes a section of layered rock, which gets increasingly steeper until a small overhang is reached (C to C/D). After this small overhang the climb continues steep and challenging (up to grade C) up to a dark band of rock preceding the final wall. This steep face is ascended to the right – there are fewer staples here than lower down (some sections C/D) – up to a ridge. From there steep again (C/D, then easier) as far as a group of pines. From here continue left past the pines, descending gently around a rock, with the final stretch to the end of the via ferrata steep and earthy.
